The Fallen Oak
This collection includes photos of the oak tree in the Warley Woods meadow that was lost during storm Darragh on December 7th 2024. Being one half of what seemed like one large tree with two trunks, the two oaks were a distinctive feature of the Woods and will be very much missed.
The power of the storm, which also brought down other trees in the Woods, was perhaps aided by already very wet ground conditions and, in this case, because most of the branches are on one side of the tree. Even so, it's always surprising when trees of this size and apparent solidity are blown over.
Whilst the photos document the aftermath of the storm, some of them also show that life carries on. The question is, how should life carry on if events like this are increasingly associated with our influence on nature? (In this case, a period of unusually wet weather followed by very high winds.)
The Warley Woods facebook page includes photos of the tree in happier times, but as time goes on the postings with such photos will go further back into time as new memories of the Woods are recorded.
