This set is deliberately limited to 13 photos because being infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus can sadly prove to be very unlucky. This virus causes the coronavirus disease which since February 11th 2020 has been known as COVID-19. The full title of the project, and the photobook available via the Blurb link in PHOTOBOOKS, is "Furloughed: 13 things not used during the first month of the COVID-19 lockdown". Many people will have a similar list of items, and of course the list is probably endless. I considered adding a photo of a bus stop I hadn't used since mid-March 2020 and a road I hadn't used for my cycle commute after March 19th, but I wanted the project to be tightly focused on the potentially greater challenge of highlighting "things" rather than "places". Initially, the set wasn't sequenced, but the order now reflects what would have been the chronological use of the things over the course of a typical weekday. It starts with no longer having a reason to be awake at 6am and ends with a type of bin that the local authority suspended the collection of during lockdown, which itself could be a comment on what many people thought about life in this period. Further information about the project is included in the book, along with some brief notes about each photo. The virus graphic I produced using Photoshop has been used for the front cover and the kitchen table work-station photo for the rear cover. The latter shows another aspect of how life changed during lockdown, at least for some people.
